Hi Bill,

I don't know if you remember me but I was in your class also. My name is Marian Tuminello Phillips. My cousin Sandy Catanese Roberts sent this message to me, and I would like to hear from you also about our class of 1957. I was at the last reunion but I don't remember seeing you.

Anyway I thought I would let you know that my Dad is 99 yrs old and is still hanging in there. My Mom died 4 yrs ago and she was 94. My Dad is at Live Oak and doing as best as he can. We hope he can make the 100 marker, and I believe he will. Also I have 3 daughters and one of them lives in Dallas, but she and her husband and twins moved to Chicago, Il about 1 month ago, and I really miss them already. I will be going there in June for the twins 3rd birthday.

When I retired from Bellsouth in 2002 I was diagnosed  with Parkinson, but I am doing okay as long as I take my medicine. It was a big shock to me when I was diagnosed, but I am leaving it in God's hand and I will be strong until it takes over but until then I will live a happy life and try not to worry about it. I was blessed with 3 daughters that are always there when I need them.

Life is great, and I hope to stay around for a long time. Also I have being seeing a friend that is younger than I, but he says that age is no object and that I look good for my age. So you see there is hope for all of us. (Ha, Ha!)

My prayers are with Sandra and Jean and may God bless them.

Bill I received your e-mail concerning  Jean Lasiter and had been keeping her on our prayer list since the reunion. I was not aware of Sandra Haddad’s medical concerns. I have not received any information about her medical problems. Like so many of us we all have special memories of Jean and Sandra. I was in love with Jean and Jo in the 2nd or 3rd grade. I had my mother buy them a Christmas present. It was a coin purse with their names on it. I know they would never remember that but I remember it as if it was yesterday. Sandra was very special to me in high school. I remember the wonderful day’s that we had at her house and swimming in their pound. She was a special person to me. Every reunion I would ask about her and would look forward to seeing her. I was always disappointed when she was not there. I have been very busy with Julie’s folks the last two months and have spent a lot of time in Shreveport . Her Father passed away last week and we are still trying to recover from his passing.

The good news for all of us that have accepted Jesus Christ is that we will all reunite one day with our savior.

Please see the note below from Mary Ann Leon Heim. She has a good point. We need to share the information about those who are ill, but we need to share information about our good fortune as well. I would like to see the Web Bulletin Board full of news like Mary Ann's below. Please take some time to send me news of your lives, your good times as well as bad.

Maybe I shall tell you the story about my 26th triathlon in Galveston on March 29--a 550-yard, open-water swim in 69-degree water without a wet suit, a 12.5-mile bike, and a 3.1-mile run in 2:05:02. I won second in the 65-69 age bracket because no other geezers in the 900 other participants were in my age group. I learned an important lesson: If you are an old guy and a slow swimmer in a wave that begins before the 29 and under women, you had better get out of the way because they will run over you in the water.

Let me hear from you.

--Note from Mary Ann Leon Heim

Bill, I really appreciate you keeping up with our classmates.  I am sorry to hear about Sandra and Jean Lasiter.  They are in my prayers.  Those of us who are healthy are very blessed.     On a good news note I would like to share that we have a new addition to our family.  My great-granddaughter was born March 28th.  Her name is Carleigh Ann.  This is my daughter Karen's daughter, Leslie's, child.  All are fine.     Sometimes we need to hear that there is some good news in this world. All of us have had times when we think everything has a negative spin, but we pray that GOD gives us the strength to accept the bad with the good.   Please share this information with all and know that we will NOT FORGET those who are suffering.    Thank you again for all you are doing.

from Sandra McKinnon Loridans--Sunday, April 6, 2008

Bill,  I echo Mary Ann’s sentiments.  When I received the news about Sandra Haddad, it brought back memories of our days in Miss Hazel’s School of Dance.   One day, Miss Hazel called Sandra H’s name and Sandra corrected her and said her name was pronounced “Sondra.”   I immediately took issue with her because my name was also Sandra and I was just plain ole Sandra!    This upset Sandra H but as we progressed through school, she also became Sandra.   We had many good times throughout our school days.   I’ve had her in my thoughts and prayers ever since I heard the news.   I also remember many wonderful experiences with Jean, Jo and Jerry; especially in Brownies and Girl Scouts.   God always gives us that strength we need when we ask for it.  I pray that the rest of Sandra and Jean’s journey through this life will be a peaceful one.  Jo and Jerry, you are also in my prayers.

Mary Ann, I’m not old enough to be a great-grandmother!!   I remember when Leslie was born.  How time does fly!

Congratulations.   Bet Bill could figure out how to post a photo?

Does anyone live in Vancouver, B.C.?    We leave on Wednesday to attend the Global Convention of Democrats Abroad there.    I’m a candidate for a seat on the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and also running for an Obama Delegate spot at the August Convention.     When I return from Vancouver, I will go to Grand Rapids, Michigan to see oldest grandson, Christian, graduate from college with a degree in Bio-Medicine.   Anyone living near there?

Cheers to all of you,   Sandra McKinnon Loridans

P.S.   Bill, I bet you didn’t mind being run over in that water!

from Sandra  Haddad Robertson, Sunday, April 6, 2008

Now that I am semi-retired, maybe I send some info for the website.  Tonight 9 of us are having dinner together and then attending the Shreveport Little Theatre production of "Dearly Departed."  Our own Betty Baker has a role in the play so we thought it would be fun to support her.  I'll send you an update on the event.

On February 23, 29 Indians met for the first Supper Club outing.  We dined at the Crescent Landing in Shreveport.  The catfish, chicken, shrimp, and all the trimmings were delicious.  We took time to really visit with each other.  After dinner we asked each person to share what has happened in their life in the past 50 years.  Everyone has had their challenges, however, we were all blessed to be able to share time together.

Our next get together has not been finalized but will probably be in May or June since we plan to meet once every quarter.  I send out an email message and we have a phone committee (Mary Ruth Frank) to touch base with those not hooked up to cyber world.  If anyone would like to get the email, please let me know.  My email is pberry1@bellsouth.net or call me at 318/549-2093.

On Feb. 3, 1959, Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J. P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson died in a plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa. Ironically, Waylon Jennings gave up his seat on the plane to Richardson because Richardson had a fever. Ten years later, Don McLean wrote "American Pie," lamenting the tragic plane crash as "The Day the Music Died." The song is full of multi-layered symbolism. I think it speaks volumes to those of us who grew up with rock 'n roll in the 50s and the upheavals we witnessed in the following decades.

I mourn Holly, Valens and Richardson on this day 49 years after their deaths. I think, indeed, the music died on this day and left America vulnerable to the "British Invasion" of the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and all that went wrong with music after the fifties. I invite you to remember Holly, Valens and Richardson by watching a performance of McLean "American Pie" at www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHkT2YfqHE4. For an interpretation of "American Pie," see www.fiftiesweb.com/amerpie-htm, and for further details see www.fiftiesweb.com/crash.htm.

It's the birthdays of Alexander Hamilton, one of the founding fathers of our country, and William James, the first American psychologist. Here are a couple of their thoughts.

Hamilton said, "The sacred rights of mankind are not to be rummaged for among old parchments or musty records. They are written, as with a sunbeam, in the whole volume of human nature by the hand of the divinity itself and can never be erased or obscured by mortal power."

James said, "Common sense and a sense of humor are the same thing, moving at different speeds. A sense of humor is just common sense, dancing."

Enjoy your weekend.

My old classmates:

Happy New Year to you all!

We have had a banner year with our 50th class reunion and had a chance to renew our friendships. However, some of our classmates have passed away in 2007; some are on the threshold of death.

However you celebrate and whatever resolutions you make, please resolve to stay in touch and perpetuate our friendships.

If you are down on this New Year's Eve or a bit pessimistic about your personal future and the future of the world, I recommend a reading of the poem below, "The Darkling Thrush," a poem Hardy purported wrote on the last night of the 20th century. You might also read the first chapter of the Gospel of John and remember that the light shines on in the darkness, and the darkness has never conquered it.

My sincere best wishes for 2008.

Bill Shaw

The Darkling Thrush

I leant upon a coppice gate

     When Frost was spectre-gray,

And Winter's dregs made desolate

     The weakening eye of day.

The tangled bine-stems scored the sky

     Like strings of broken lyres,

And all mankind that haunted nigh

     Had sought their household fires.

The land's sharp features seemed to be

     The Century's corpse outleant,

His crypt the cloudy canopy,

     The wind his death-lament.

The ancient pulse of germ and birth

     Was shrunken hard and dry,

And every spirit upon earth

     Seemed fervourless as I.

At once a voice arose among

     The bleak twigs overhead

In a full-hearted evensong

     Of joy illimited;

An aged thrush, frail, gaunt, and small,

     In blast-beruffled plume,

Had chosen thus to fling his soul

     Upon the growing gloom.

So little cause for carolings

     Of such ecstatic sound

Was written on terrestrial things

     Afar or nigh around,

That I could think there trembled through

     His happy good-night air

Some blessed Hope, whereof he knew

     And I was unaware.

Here is a change in ordering the FPHS Director:  mail $5 check made out to FPHS Class of '57, c/o Pat Sanders Johnson, 9065 Mansfield Road, Shreveport, LA 71118.

Not many blog readers or responders. I posted another entry this morning. Rember you can reply and write about anything or suggest topics you would like to explore. Blog instructions are on the home page of this Web site. I would like to see more dialog.

Because of the length of the e-mail recipients, I had to divide the FPHS addresses into two distribution lists, A-M (FPHS57Dir) and N-Z (FPHS57Dir2) with one exception: Gary Reaves somehow ended up in the FPHS57Dir list.) If you do not see an e-mail address in the distribution list in your e-mail, it most likely is in the other distribution list. For example, Worth Roberts sent me a message today about Jerry Lasiter-Hampton's address. It was not in the recipients of his list, but I have it in the A-M list, so Worth did not see her address. I hope all this is clear. If you think, however, I have left someone out, or if you have an updated address, please send it to me.

If you want to develop distribution lists as I have to all classmates for whom we have valid address, then, you would be restricted by the maximum number of recipients your e-mail server will allow in a distribution list, which is usually 100, and develop two lists as I have and send out duplicate e-mails to each list. (The second list will not work as CC; I have already tried that.)

If you want a copy of the entire distribution list, sent me an e-mail request. You will most likely have to enter the addresses individually as I did.

I have had no visitors to the blog yet. I posted a comment on Jenny Jones and Shakespeare yesterday. To read the blog or comment on the entry, go to our Web and scroll down to and click on the blog link.

If you find these e-mails troublesome and want to be removed from the distribution list, please let me know.

I have added a blog to our class Web site. (Blog stands for Weblog.)
You can access it at
http://blog.fairparkclassor57.net or go to our Web
at
www.fairparkclassof57.net
and click on the link to the blog.

Here's how the blog works. I post comments on the blog, and you can
access those comments. There is only one blog entry now. When you access
the blog, you can read it and send a comment to me for posting by
clicking on the date of the blog entry. The comment comes to me, and I read
it and post it for other visitors of the blog to read. If you click
the "Subscribe" button and enter your e-mail address, you will receive an
e-mail every time I post a comment of my own or comments from others;
it's like a list-serve list. If you don't want your e-mail cluttered up
with blog notices, remember, you don't have to subscribe to comment.
If you do subscribe and get tired of being notified with each posting,
you can unsubscribe at any time.

I may make a second posting today or tomorrow about our famous (or
infamous) English teacher Jenny Jones. We can then see what our
classmates remember about their experiences in her class or in the classes of
other FPHS English teachers.

If you have subjects or memories you would like to blog about, sent
them to me, and we shall explore them.

So, access, read, enjoy, participate or not in FPHS blogging.

September 23, 2007

Dear Mary Ann, Bill and Pat,   First of all, I want to thank all of you, and the entire Reunion Committee,  for the smashing success of our 50th Class Reunion.  I had a ball!   I am only sorry that some of our classmates missed the occasion.

Bill, I am very grateful to you for your efforts to keep us electronically in touch.  I think the Website is a great idea and I am sure it will keep us closer.   One of the regrets that I had after the Reunion ended was not being able to spend time talking and sharing with everybody that I wanted to during the short period we had together.   I really wanted to know more about what has happened  in the lives of many of my classmates in the last 50 (still sounds unreal)  years ,  i.e. family, profession, travels, places lived,  political interest, personal experiences they would share,  etc.   Obviously, time did not permit this.   I know that some of us may have personal Websites but many do not.   What do you think about featuring our classmates (perhaps alphabetically) on the website with “whatever” information they would share.   Jimmy Stockard sends me the ’54 FPHS “bulletins” and they started doing this after their last reunion.

Again, thanks and hugs to all for a wonderful event.

Sandra McKinnon Loridans
